The Travel Personality of Every Generation

How changing priorities, lifestyles and aspirations are shaping the way different generations see the world.

Everything we do and all the choices we make are influenced by our perception of our own experiences or those of others around us. One of the many choices we make is where, and how we travel. Certain generations, based on their time of birth and the surroundings they grew up in, are grouped together because of the common traits they share- the Gen Z, Millennials and Gen X. These are the three generations we will talk about: who they are, how they are different from each other, and why they prefer certain destinations and share some common travelling habits.

The Genz (1997-2012)

The generation that took a stand for individuality, explored their sexuality and undoubtedly put themselves out on the internet without any fear of judgement and consequences are Gen Z- the carefree, laidback types; but not all that chill, they also get a little anxious when they are in a crisis. They are spontaneous, and certainly not afraid to put themselves out there. This behaviour reflects a broader aspect of their habits and choices, including travel. They often prefer places that are thrilling yet aesthetically appealing; they want to click a selfie while sweating up a mountain. They are fearless, which makes them risk-takers and experimentalists with their itineraries. Some of the places where this generation perfectly fits are:

1. Japan

Japan is the topmost place for this young generation because of the fun experiences the place has to offer- the famously known electric town of the city of Akihabara, Japanese festivals, sushi-making classes or a ride on the Shinkansen- all the new things to do, nothing regular.

2. Thailand

The place of calm and hobbies, explore the floating markets, go kayaking, or try snorkelling. Or the Chiang Mai, Pai, Krabi and Koh Phangan serves the best for a instagram worthy post along with all the thrills,  basically everything a Gen Z expects from a trip comes directly from this place.

3. Vietnam

This place is perfect for Gen Z because they share a common love for nightlife. For the night owls, who naturally enjoy staying out late, and the vibrant nightlife of Vietnam in the streets of Hoi An, Ta Hien and Bui Vien gives you a solid reason to visit.

4. Meghalaya

This generation is all about exploration, and that is why Meghalaya place is a natural fit for them. It is home to a lot of Asia’s preeminent attractions-from having the cleanest river and cleanest village to the tallest plunge, living root bridges, an open-air museum and being the Rock Capital of India. This place is perfect for some outdoor escapism.

The Millenials (1981-1996)

This generation has often followed the pattern that society lays out for them. They are not one to rebel, but rather adjust to what is expected from them, hence always picking things that are safe and assured. This behaviour pattern tells us that they prefer proper planning before a trip. A report from The State of the American Traveler tells us that 62.2% of Millennials prioritise their travel spending. They always go for places where they can take a break from all the expectations and norms, hence favouring relaxing over adventure while being prudent. Some of the places that fit perfectly are:

1. Greece

Rajasthan is a place filled with history and royalty. Be it the heritage-rich Udaipur, bustling Jaipur, fortified Jodhpur or a rural escape like Khimsar or Dharan villages, it is one of the finest places in India for some traditionalist indulgence.

The Gen X (1965-1980)

From the age of 46 to 61, the Generation X, are the ones who grew up before the world became modern.. They witnessed the transition of the world from offline to online, making them independent, adaptable, practical and a little sceptical with a little nostalgia for the pre-digital ways of doing things. All these traits add up to a person who is very value-conscious, usually prefers family trips and prioritises comfort over trend-driven trips. This makes them a good fit for wellness places or hotels where they can slow down while still not miss out on the experience.

1. Canada
