The recent surge in unexpected flight cancellations, largely attributed to thick fog, has thrown a wrench into the travel plans and onward journeys of numerous passengers. This disruption has left many travellers stranded in departures for what seems like forever. While experiencing anger, frustration, and anxiety is a natural response to this stressful situation, it’s crucial to take a step back from the chaos, find ways to make the extended wait at the airport less trying and even fun, and familiarise yourself with your rights as a passenger.

Make Use of the Lounge

Opting for airport lounges provides a welcome respite from the chaos. Establishments such as the 080 Lounge at Bengaluru Airport offer a range of facilities, including bar counters, a compact library, a dedicated movie screening area, buffet setups, and various other amenities. Similarly, the lounge situated in Terminal 2 of Mumbai Airport boasts extravagant features and services.

Explore the Airport Food

Make the most of your time by exploring the diverse bars and restaurants within the airport. Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, for instance, provides a range of dining experiences. From chefs crafting international cuisines to live stations showcasing the culinary delights of the capital right before your eyes, there’s a variety to savour. Likewise, at Goa airport, you can indulge in some of the most renowned seafood and exquisite flavours of Goan cuisine.

Relax at a Spa

While you are sitting and waiting for your flight announcement, it is better to pamper yourself and relax a bit. Almost all the airports have a spa facility where you can get a massage, get your nails done, or just take a break from the stress of the delay. The Encalm Spa at the IGI, Delhi, offers various relaxing techniques and therapies that will leave you feeling rejuvenated and fresh.

Know your Rights

Most importantly, use this extra time to do your research on what the airlines owe you. Under the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) guidelines passengers experiencing delays of less than 24 hours are entitled to meals and refreshments at the airport whereas delays exceeding 24 hours, passengers have the right to hotel accommodation with transfers.

However, in case a flight gets delayed by more than six hours, the DGCA mandates the airline to inform the passenger 24 hours before the departure time. In this case, the passenger is provided with an option to seek a full refund or a seat on an alternative flight.

Flight Cancellation Claims

If the flight is delayed by more than six hours, the DGCA mandates the airline to alert the passenger 24 hours before the departure time. The airline is required to refund the ticket in case you are not willing to travel on its alternate or subsequent flight or on another airline’s flight. However, remember that airline is not obligated to provide compensation if the cancellation or delay of a flight is due to exceptional circumstances beyond the airline’s influence like meteorological conditions, or security concerns.

What Should I Do In Case of a Delay?

Stay calm and follow the airline rules, especially during unexpected issues like bad weather causing flight delays. If the weather doesn’t improve, be ready for delays and understand that the crew is prioritizing everyone’s safety. Most importantly, pack your essentials in your hand luggage, so you have everything you might need in case of an emergency, and don’t leave important items in your checked luggage.
