BMW has revealed the first of a flurry of new EVs that it is set to launch over the next few years.
Unsurprisingly, the car-maker has begun this onslaught with the BMW iX3, an electric derivative of the BMW X3. By 2023, the BMW Group wants to introduce 25 electrified models by 2023, more than half of which will be fully electric. Following the iX3 will be the i4 coupe and iNEXT SUV in 2021.
The iX3 incorporates BMW’s fifth-generation EV hardware in a modular chassis and is powered by an 80kWh battery that puts out 286PS and has a range of 460km as per the WLTP cycle. The iX3 can get from 0 to 100kmph in 6.8s and go on to a limited 180kmph top speed. In keeping with the BMW brand image, power is sent to only the rear wheels and the adaptive suspension is standard.
The new hardware groups together the electric motor, transmission, and power electronics within a new, separate electric drive component leading to gains in packaging, weight-saving, and efficiency. The SUV uses BMW’s newest battery tech to make it compatible with 150kWh fast chargers. This means it can get up to an 80 percent charge in 34 minutes. The electric motor, power electronics, charging technology, and high-voltage battery have all been developed in-house. These new-generation components have led to a 30 percent increase in power-density when compared to the BMW i3. There are three levels of regen available.
The iX3 also features a strong equipment list. In the base Inspiring trim, there is LED headlights, three-zone automatic climate control, automatic tailgate, panoramic sunroof, driving assistant systems, and ambient lighting. The Impressive trim adds 20-inch light-alloy wheels, acoustic glazing, sport seats, Vernasca leather trim, HUD, parking assistant, and Harman Kardon audio. The iX3 features specially designed aerodynamic wheels and also debuts IconicSounds Electric, a soundscape that has been developed for BMW’s EVs by Hans Zimmer. The navigation has been optimised for EV driving and a new charging card gives access to over 4.5 lakh public chargers globally.
The BMW iX3 will be built at the brand’s Shenyang facility in China. The electric SUV will see a market launch later in 2020. There is no word yet on whether the iX3 will come to India, but given that the EQC, I-Pace, and e-Tron have been confirmed for our market, it is reasonable to expect the BMW EV SUV to sold here as well. Although we expect prices to be close to the Rs 80 lakh mark.
