A famous element of Baroque architecture is the deliberately unfinished architectural elements that help give the design a unique feature. Originated in Italy in late 16th and early 17th century, this architectural style made its impact in other parts of Europe like France, Spain, Germany and even Latin America. The baroque era primarily focused on Churches and Palaces.

 

The Basilica of Bom Jesus, India

Located in Goa, India; this 400-year-old church was built with Baroque style architecture holds both the tomb and mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier. Construction of the Basilica started in 1594 and was completed in 1605. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the basilica is one of the oldest churches in the world. San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, Rome

Commonly known as The Church of Saint Charles at the Four Fountains, the church was designed by Francesco Borromini. The church is an iconic masterpiece of Baroque architecture, located near the Quirinale Palace. Many historians and architects believe that the church is the most perfect of all Baroque structures.

Les Invalides, Paris

 

Built by French architect Liberal Bruant, the enormous chapel dome was completed by Jules Hardouin Mansart. Initially, built as a retirement home for veterans, Les Invalides is currently houses the museum of the French army, museum of military models and museum of contemporary history. It is also the final resting place of Napoleon Bonaparte.

 

Palace of Versailles, Versailles

One of the grandest palaces ever to be built, this former French royal residence is now an important landmark in France. The famous Hall of Mirrors has 357 mirrors reflecting the grand gardens. Though the King’s apartment was built in the Italian baroque style, each room bore the name of a different Greek god or goddess.

 

Zacatecas Cathedral, Zacatecas

Located in Zacatecas, Mexico, built in 1730 and 1760, the cathedral reflects the influence of Spanish architecture. In 1993, the cathedral was inducted in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The cathedral is decorated with facades that represent the Roman Catholic Church. The Holy Eucharist is surrounded by the twelve apostles. The beauty of the façade accentuates either in late afternoon or in the night.
