In a concerted effort to reduce their carbon footprint, luxury watchmakers are increasingly integrating sustainable and recycled materials into their series production watches. Moreover, they are actively supporting initiatives aimed at mitigating the impacts of climate change. On World Earth Day, we shine a spotlight on these pioneering luxury watch brands, whose commitment to sustainability is not only commendable but also reflective of a broader movement towards a greener and more responsible future.

1. Tag Heuer

In partnership with the World Surf League, Tag Heuer has been a longstanding advocate for sustainability in surfing, with its Aquaracer collection leading the charge for ocean preservation . Additionally, they’ve introduced the Aquaracer Tortoise Shell Effect, a limited edition timepiece, with proceeds directed towards turtle conservation efforts in Indonesia.

2. Panerai

Panerai’s collaboration with Prada for the Luminor Due Prada Re-Nylon collection reflects its commitment to sustainability. This partnership merges Italian design with eco-consciousness, featuring straps crafted from Prada Re-Nylon, derived from 100% recycled materials. The brand has collaborated with IOC-UNESCO to support the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, reinforcing its legacy in underwater exploration.

Through its partnership with Nespresso, Hublot is making significant strides in sustainability. Together, they’ve crafted The Big Bang Unico Nespresso using recycled aluminium capsules and coffee grounds. Hublot is also a proud member of the Responsible Jewellery Council, ensuring ethical practices in their supply chain. Furthermore, the brand provides eco-friendly watch cases known as Green Boxes, which boast 98% recycled components and contribute to a circular economy.

4. Blancpain

Blancpain’s Ocean Commitment programme is a testament to its profound connection with sustainability, dating back to the launch of the world’s first modern diving watch, the Fifty Fathoms, in 1953. This milestone marked the beginning of a 70-year journey of collaboration with the ocean community and support for conservation initiatives. Their efforts are focused on raising awareness of ocean beauty, contributing to scientific research, and implementing effective conservation measures.

5. Jaeger-LeCoultre

As a member of the RE100, Jaeger-LeCoultre relies on 99% renewable electricity worldwide and has made multiple efforts to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 46% by 2030. The brand has also ceased sales of PVC-containing products and introduced recyclable materials. Plastic reduction measures extend to packaging, with a new watch box reducing plastic usage by 93%.

6. Ulysse Nardin

Crafted with locally sourced materials and assembled by Swiss watchmakers, they uphold the highest standards of quality. Committed to ethical practices, Ulysse Nardin ensures all gold has been responsibly sourced since 2017 and strictly adheres to the Kimberley Process for conflict-free diamonds.
