3 Green Brands Merging Sustainability with Craft

The observation of World Environment Day this past weekend warrants some introspection about our choices as consumers and our collective responsibility towards the planet. Taking small steps to reduce individual carbon footprint is a step in the right direction, and supporting brands that are working towards creating a more sustainable future can nudge more companies to follow best practices and good governance with regard to environmental concerns, through their operations. We highlight three brands that are making jewellery, furniture and home decor eco-friendly and guilt-free!

Baro Market ‘Shourai’ Collection by Stayajit Vetoskar

Shourai Earrings

Available at Baro Market, this handcrafted jewellery collection created by architect and industrial designer Satyajit Vetoskar is titled ‘Shourai’, which in Japanese means the ‘future’. The pieces are made with aluminium reclaimed from discarded aircraft. Satyajit takes this aluminium and creates precise cubes which are then combined with reused 18k gold and ethically sourced diamonds to create unique adornments that are minimalist in aesthetic and kind to the environment.

Prava ‘Boho Earth’ Collection

The Boho Earth collection by Prava exudes a rustic charm through nature-inspired motifs and colours, and an eclectic mix of artistic styles that derive from Boho culture. The patterns and textures layered over natural materials evoke a feeling of gentle warmth and energy. Together, the cane weaves and sturdy wood, earthy materials such as cotton, accents in faux leather, and natural dyes paint a picture of familiar comfort.

Prava has introduced sustainability to their operations by buying back their well-loved furniture from consumers to solve the complex problem of furniture waste disposal and ensure that none of their products ends up in a landfill once they fall out of use. Unlike other forms of waste, furniture is difficult to dispose of and recycle and is often illegally dumped—leading to it ending up in a landfill eight times out of ten. To reduce furniture waste, the brand has applied the principles of the circular economy by buying back old Prava furniture and giving it a new lease on life.
