Upcycled Art: FUTURE.ISNOW by Satyajit Vetoskar at Gallery 47 A

FUTURE. ISNOW by Satyajit Vetoskar is the first show to be displayed at Mumbai’s recently launched art and culture hub, Gallery 47 A in Khotachiwadi. It is an ode to the ordinary, and a study in sustainable design. On display from 14 May to 12 June, the collection will showcase the artist’s independent and collaborative work, which offers a glimpse into the immense possibilities of the practical use of existing resources with minimal waste. The future, Satyajit believes, is not a speculative concept. We have the responsibility to create it.

Cockpit, a collection of table clocks made using instrument gauges of dead MIGs and other flying ghosts.

A Goa-based architect and industrial designer, Satyajit launched his sustainable design brand BANDIT at the Serendipity Arts Festival in 2018. He is the winner of four design awards—notably, Lakme Fashion Week Circular Design Challenge 2021 and Lexus Design Award India 2021. Having had a multi-disciplinary experience in design, his vision is to collaborate with artists, designers and other sustainable brands to keep challenging paradigms in the use of different materials and their latent functionality.

Bandit Bags, made using waste and excess tarpaulin, canvas, billboard flex, denim, upcycled car seatbelts, and recycled PET bottles.

For this showcase of mindfully crafted objects, Satyajit was inspired by a visit to Bombay—while flying into the city, he noticed a sea of blue tarpaulin shielding the city from the rain—which got him thinking about upcycling.

Kalam, a line of fountain pens made using brass, used artillery shells, Aluminium from old aircrafts and wood from handloom spindles.

The show is based on the idea of creating uncommon, durable, and well designed products using ordinary, common, and reclaimed materials like stainless steel, reclaimed aluminium from aircraft, reused gold, old artillery shells, wood from handloom spindles, tarpauline and gauges.

The Shourai Bracelet, made using Aluminium reclaimed from discarded aircrafts, reclaimed gold and ethically sourced diamonds.

FUTURE. ISNOW by Satyajit Vetoskar is on display at Gallery 47 A from 14 May to 12 June 2022.
