Serving Drinks: Choose the right Glassware

We have all been confused when it comes to serving drinks to our guests. We are not talking about the Cocktail/Mocktail menu planning, but the glassware. Selecting the appropriate glassware is one of the most crucial aspect of a cocktail party or any event.

Different and specific glassware has evolved with time to make your drinks aesthetically pleasing and practically better. You might have a perfectly measured cocktail recipe but the glassware is responsible for imparting the flavours and aromas. Enhanced aromas and drinking temperatures are the two most important factors that can have a drastic effect on your drinking experience.

Red Wine Glass:

A red wine glass should have a longer stem and a large round bowl which assists in swirling the wine to aerate it. Additionally the longer stem helps in keeping the hands away from the bowl, so that we can maintain the temperature of the wine.

White Wine Glass:

White Wines have a tendency to oxidise quicker than the red’s. Hence the glassware has to be chosen accordingly, a smaller bowl with the long stem helps maintain the delicate notes that the white wines usually have.

Champagne Flutes:

The aerated wines require even less surface to preserve the bubbles for a longer time, hence long stems paired with thin bowls form the perfect glassware for your bubbly’s.

Cocktail Glass:

The traditional and most widely used cocktail glass comes with an inverted cone on a long stem. These glasses are generally used to serve cocktails without ice and holds anywhere between 3-6 ounces of liquids.

HighBall Glass:

Highball glass is a large tumbler that is used to serve tall cocktails. Generally any cocktail that has a large quantity of a mixer in its recipe is served in a highball glass. All the mixers are poured over the ice held by the highball glass.

Margarita Glass:

A highly specialised glassware is used nowadays for this famous cocktail. Earlier margarita was only served in margarita glasses but nowadays with the changing trends a variety of vessels are being used to serve this concoction.

Brandy Snifters:

The brandy snifter is a short stemmed glassware with a large bowl, which helps warming the drink it contains. The bowl allows the drink to be swirled and the shorter mouth helps trap the aromas giving the drinker a complete full bodied experience of the drink.

The Glencairn Whiskey Glass:

This highly speciality glassware was developed with the sole purpose of enhancing the flavours whilst drinking Whiskey. It derives its design from the traditional nosing glasses widely used by the blenders and connoisseurs. Flaunting the large bowl to present the colour and a tapered mouth for easy drinking and trapping the aromas.
