Panerai presents two new special editions with a completely original dial, inspired by one of the pendulum clocks which clients in the last century could admire in the historic tore in the Piazza San Giovanni, in Florence.
Since it was founded in 1860, Florence’s OrologeriaSvizzera – as the Panerai family’s historic store was called – was the watch and clock retailer favoured by the aristocracy and upper classes of Florence. In fact, even before it created the first models for the Royal Italian Navy, the Panerai boutique was selling pocket watches, wristwatches, table clocks and magnificent pendulum clocks from the best makers, and its exceptional stock of these clocks was displayed on the first floor of the shop which still today is situated facing the Baptistery of Florence.
The dial of one of these pendulum clocks was the original inspiration for a new creation in vintage style by the Panerai Manufacture: the Radiomir 1940 3 Days Acciaio – 47mm. Available in two versions, ivory (PAM00791) or black (PAM00790), this new design is notable for the great simplicity and retro elegance of the dial, with its large figures printed in an intriguing art deco font between the railway track chapter ring indicating the minutes and a smaller ring within it. The tapered,spear-shaped hour and minute hands appear in a Panerai design for the first time.
All the other elements of the new Special Edition are classic Panerai. The Radiomir 1940 case47 mm in diameter is made of AISI 316L stainless steel, an alloy that is particularly tough and resistant to corrosion (the watch is water-resistant to 10 bars, a depth of about 100 metres), with a overall polished finish and an open back through which the Manufacture movement can be admired. The bezel surrounds a slightly domed Plexiglas ® crystal, inspired by some of the historic Panerai models. The strap is made of natural leather with contrasting beige stitching and it is impressed with the OP logo.
The Radiomir 1940 3 Days Acciaio – 47mm is powered by the P.3000 Manufacture calibre, hand wound with a power reserve of three days, thanks to its two spring barrels. Visible through the large crystal sapphire porthole in the back are the three brushed-finish bridges protecting the mechanism and the bridge with twin supports on which the balance 13.2 mm in diameter (3 Hz)is firmly mounted. The P.3000 movement also has the device by which the time can be swiftly adjusted: it enables the hour hand to be moved forwards or backward in jumps of one hour at a time without interfering with the movement of the minute hand or the running of the watch.
