Make Time for Yourself: A Guide to Self-Care for Moms

By Lyla Shroff

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we often forget to take some time out for ourselves. We find it difficult to juggle tasks and also prioritise ourselves while doing so. The same could be said for all the hard-working mothers out there. Many mothers have to deal with several tasks such as completing daily chores or excelling at their jobs, all while taking care of their family. The health and wellbeing of her family is often a mother’s first priority, which puts her own physical and mental health on the back-burner. It is partially due to the traditional cultural system and social standards of our society that mothers usually ignore the signs of poor mental health. Therefore, it is crucial for other family members to pay close attention to a mother’s health and make her wellbeing a top priority. That being said, moms should also find me-time. This Mother’s Day, we have curated some self-care tips for moms, so that they can have the opportunity to feel more like themselves.

1. Be a social butterfly

Spending some time with friends is a great way to destress. Have lunch at a new restaurant, go shopping, or simply take a walk together. Just forget about everything you need to do for a couple hours and catch up with your friends. It is remarkable how tension-free one can be after talking to loved ones and sharing their problems.

2. Pamper yourself

Some alone time can also make a world of a difference on stressful days. Whether it’s a simple sheet mask or a solo spa day, pampering yourself for a few hours can make you feel much more relaxed. Light a candle and soak in a soothing bubble bath, do a home manicure, and paint your nails—you deserve it!

3. Bake something delicious

Although cooking may be a part of your daily chores, baking yourself a sweet treat could prove to be a much more exhilarating task than you expected. Whip up a batch of chocolate chip cookies or a gooey chocolate cake. You can turn on a simple YouTube video to follow along if baking is not your forte.

4. Get creative

Stimulating your brain with fun activities like drawing, crocheting, or solving a puzzle can help calm your mind. Just simply buy yourself a colouring book, grab some art supplies and you are good to go.

5. Stay active

If you are more inclined towards physical activities than being creative, you can take a walk, go to the gym, or do some home workouts. Physical activities are proven to provide better sleep and reduce stress.

6. Spend some time with family

It is important to work on building a healthy and positive relationship with your family to avoid any future sources of stress. Have a family game night with board games like Monopoly and Scrabble or just a lazy movie night together to enjoy classic films like Home Alone or The Parent Trap.
