Acclaimed chef and restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson brings his much celebrated and admired restaurant and live music venue from the streets of Harlem NYC to East London, with the addition of an all-day taqueria and bar on Curtain Road called ‘Tienda Roosteria’.
Red Rooster Shoreditch opened its doors at Michael Achenbaum’s The Curtain, a hotel, restaurant and members club last month.
Samuelsson opened Red Rooster on Lenox Avenue Harlem in 2011 as a neighbourhood restaurant celebrating the richness of Harlem’s history and culture. The thoughtful and eclectic menu offers American cuisine rooted in comfort food seen through the eyes of Ethiopian-born, Swedish-raised Samuelsson. Created to be so much more than a restaurant, Red Rooster is a gathering place for locals and visitors, young and old, where food and drink is enjoyed alongside soulful tunes and jazz greats, live.
Transported to London, Red Rooster Shoreditch will celebrate Samuelsson’s take on American comfort food classics with many signature dishes from the Harlem original, while new dishes will be created especially for Shoreditch. Alongside Harlem’s now famous Cornbread with honey butter and Deviled Eggs with sea urchin mayo, Sammy’s Chicken N Waffles, Helga’s Meatballs and candied bacon.
With 142 covers, Red Rooster features a large, dine-at open kitchen with adjacent DJ booth. Music – live and expertly collated playlists – will bathe the space alongside a fun, bright internal terrace flanked by beautiful bare-brick walls.
The music programming, live five nights a week, will feature young, up-and-coming London talent, and Harlem’s now famous Gospel Brunch will make the journey, albeit using a local London gospel choir, serenading guests on Sundays with soulful sounds.
Marcus Samuelsson has also brought us his cookbook for the UK audience – Red Rooster the Cookbook; a real love letter to his beloved Harlem.
The restaurant is open throughout the week. (Please check for weekend timings.)
