For many, winter is a time to keep themselves warm and their fashion spirits high. We are very conscious for choosing the right clothing for the season. The fabrics during this season form an important segment whilst choosing or designing your outfits. Fabrics may vary according to the season and also the choice of fabric decides how comfortable you are.
The winter fabrics are thicker to keep you warm, beating the dropping temperatures. Taking these factors into consideration, let’s look at the fabrics you can wear for this winter and also look trendy.
Flannel
Flannel, is considered as the great winter fashion fabric to rely on, and originally made from the carded wool or worsted wool. It was quite recognised during the 16th century and later with the trends in fashion we have adapted to the new types of fabrics. Today we find a mixed fabrics which is more comfortable and light, which is made incorporating a synthetic fibre with a natural fibre to increase the overall strength of the fabric and resist to abrasion.
Wool flannels are used to make trousers, skirts, suits, and coats. With an option of French flannel which is a variation of wool flannel that has a more fluid drape.
Velvet
Velvet fabric is associated with nobility and is known for the unusual softness and appearance as well as its high cost of production. The fabric was introduced in Baghdad by the Kashmiri merchants, and since then Cairo is one of the major producer in the world. There are many types of Velvet fabrics, some of them listed here are Cisele, Devore, Embossed, Voided, and Pipe-on-pile these comes with designs and are quiet common during wedding seasons here in India. The fabric comes with a small amount of spandex which is added to give certain amount of stretch to the final material. With Devore velvet, one can make evening dresses, jackets and scarves as the fabric comes with a plain background.
Tweed
The tweed are woollen fabric which are made from carded wool and was originated in London in 1830s with name ‘tweels’, which is said to misinterpreted with the river Tweed. Tweed is a common fabrics used for making caps, vests, trousers, overcoats and sports jackets during winters. Tweed jackets are great for winter and can be worn in both formal and for a smart causal looks.
Corduroy
Corduroy fabric is typically classified as a winter fabric, and known for its characteristics parallel, lengthwise cords or ridges. Corduroy is a durable fabric and parallel ridges found on the fabric are apt for making straight trousers and skirts. The thickness of the fabrics makes it quite warm and can be used to make caps, shirts and bags as well. There are three types of corduroy: the pincord, the pinwale and the needlecord which is quiet light and soft.
Silk
Silk is an extremely comfortable fabric to wear in warm climates because of its absorbency. It is produced from natural fibre produce by larvae of the silkworm (mulberry moth). With property of low heat conductivity that enables to retain a layer of warm air close to the skin makes silk suitable for cold weather and used in make pyjamas and used for bed sheets during winter. The natural, smooth and shiny textured also gives good options for party wear shirts and dresses.
“The winter season is the time for occasion wear with the festivities and to keep one warm.” says Ashish Soni ace designer.
He further adds “For winters some of my favourite fabrics which are super versatile and fashionable are textured fabrics, silk jacquard fabrics, and embossed or printed velvet luxurious wools ranging from merino to cashmere. Most of these fabrics have either both the above mentioned qualities or either of them.”
