Succeeding the Romanesque architectural style, Gothic is different with its skeleton like structure. The finest examples of this style of architecture can be ancient Churches and buildings. Most striking features can be pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses which allowed the structures to be taller and stronger.
Notre-Dame Cathedral, France
The Cathedral is considered to be one of the greatest illustrations of French Gothic Architecture. Notre-Dame and the Eifel Tower are Paris’s most famous landmarks. Located on the island of Ile de la Cite, the construction of the cathedral commissioned by Maurice de Sully started on 1163 and was finally completed on 1345. Notre-Dame Cathedral was inducted in UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991 and is renowned for its gothic sculpture and glass art.
The Cathedral Church of Milan, Italy
A prime example of Gothic Architecture is the Milan Cathedral. It took 600 years for the Cathedral to be completed. The building in its current state was finally completed in 1965. Being the third largest church in the world, it is mostly dominated by its façade which extends into a forest of spires and pinnacles that have artistic and physical purpose. The cathedral developed rapidly in 1402.
St. Paul’s Cathedral, India
A fine example of Gothic architecture in India, the foundation of the cathedral was laid in 1839 and was completed by 1847. Located in proximity with the Victoria Memorial on Chowringhee Road, Kolkata, the cathedral was re-designed to its current state after the earthquake of 1934. The church included a 201 ft high spire, 5 clocks weighing 5 tonnes each. Said to be the largest church in Kolkata, it was also the first church built outside the territories of the British Empire.
Metz Cathedral, France
Also known as Cathedral of Saint Stephen of Metz, the cathedral is located in Lorraine, France and is considered a prime example of French Gothic architecture. The construction began on 1220’s and was completed in 1552. Local stone called Jaumont gives the church a unique yellow colour. The entrance consists of a plethora of statues synchronized with the building. Metz Cathedral has the largest area of stained glass on all of France.
Westminster Abbey, United Kingdom
One of the best examples of Early English Gothic style of architecture, Westminster Abbey is not only a working church but also holds historical significance. 17 monarchs from King Henry III have been buried at this church. The architecture is inspired from the 13th century era. Also, every monarch since William the Conqueror have been crowned here as well. The construction of the new building started in 1245 but Henry III couldn’t complete it. The church in its final setting was completed by Richard II in 1388.
Cologne Cathedral, Germany
One of the most important churches in Germany and a pilgrimage church, Cologne Cathedral is a true masterpiece of European Gothic architecture. With the foundations of the church being laid in the Middle Ages around 1248. Construction started in 1842 and completed in 1880. Several important works in the cathedral survived even though most of the church was severely damaged in both the world wars. The remains of the biblical Magi also known as the Three Wise Men have been a prominent pilgrimage for many around the world.
