Chef Munidasa rose to fame when he opened his Japanese restaurant Nihonbashi in Colombo in 1995, followed by the Ministry of Crab, where Sri Lanka’s popular lagoon crabs are the culinary stars, in 2011. Their Signature dishes include Pepper Crab with a sauce prepared using hand-crushed and whole black peppercorns, and the original Garlic Chilli Crab, blending Italian olive oil, garlic, Sri Lankan chilli flakes and Japanese soy sauce – served with Kade bread. Ministry of Crab has been consecutively listed in “Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants” since 2015 and has been awarded “Best Restaurant in Sri Lanka” for the past three years. This is its first pop-up in Japan. Chef Dharshan Munidasa says, “Our Ministry of Crab has travelled to London, Sydney, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and the Maldives to bring our unique dishes to diners around the world, but of all the pop-ups I could do, Tokyo is a very special one: my home. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity in the city where I was born and grew up in. Who I became a chef is because of my dual heritage. It’s like coming home for me, and we are excited to bring our signature dishes of the finest crabs and prawns to offer a unique dining experience in Tokyo.” Open for evening dining only, the pop-up Ministry of Crab will be housed in Shangri-La Hotel, Tokyo, The Pavilion on Level 27, which will be transformed with furnishings and a convivial communal dining setting inspired by the Ministry of Crab’s iconic restaurant in Colombo.
