Cathay Pacific is the first airline to brew its own craft beer.
Named Betsy, the craft beer has been specially brewed to taste great in the air as well as on the ground. It has been specially manufactured for Cathay Pacific Airways and is now being served at around 35,000 feet.
The name Betsy comes from the very first airplane, a Douglas DC3, which brought passengers to their destination between 1940 and 1950.
It is no secret that the cabin pressure and the airports influence the palate of the passengers, and so the new beer was produced with the help of a combination of science and traditional brewing methods. In cooperation with Hong Kong Beer Co., Hong Kong and UK ingredients were used and a special carbonation which was carried out to taste both air and soil.
The use of the “Dragon Eye” fruit is the special flavor of the drink. The special aromatic properties make the beer unmistakable. In addition, a small portion of honey from the New Territories, north of Hong Kong, is added to the beer.
The use of “Fuggle”, the most famous English hops, which every ale improves, also gives the Betsy Beer it’s earthy and full bodied taste.
First and Business Class passengers traveling between March 1 and April 30, 2017, on the Hong Kong and the UK routes Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester will enjoy the new Betsy Beers. The Betsy Beer is also served in the Hong Kong and Heathrow airline lounges, as well as in selected Swire owned restaurants in Hong Kong, including Mr & Mrs Fox, Café Gray Deluxe, Plat du Jour, Public, Sugar and The Continental.
In addition, the beer can also be purchased online via Deli Delight in March and April.
