When winter rolls around, it’s not just about cosying up by the fire or sipping on hot cocoa (although we’re not saying no to that!). Winter is the season that transforms landscapes into magical playgrounds where the snow isn’t just for show—it’s for fun! When winter adventures come to mind, skiing and snowboarding are often the first choices. However, Mammoth Lakes transforms into an adventure hub for winter activities and experiences beyond the traditional, making it an ideal destination for the perfect active winter trip.
1. Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is one of the most popular winter outdoor activities, ranking just behind snowboarding and skiing. Each year, crowds of people enjoy snowshoeing adventures, and the stunning landscapes of Mammoth Lakes featuring majestic mountains, frozen lakes, and pine forests make it the perfect setting for your first snowshoeing experience. Explore the Mammoth Lakes Basin, Panorama Dome, Shady Rest Park, and Minaret Vista, where endless natural beauty awaits budding snowshoers.
2. Cross-Country Skiing
During the winter months, hiking trails in Mammoth Lakes transform into snowy paths perfect for winter sports. The Mammoth Lakes Trail System offers miles of groomed trails open to the public for cross-country skiing. Beginners can also take lessons and rent equipment at the Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center, which features 19 miles of freshly groomed tracks winding through the picturesque Mammoth Lakes Basin.
3. Snow Biking
Fat bikes, also known as snow bikes, have become the latest trend in the biking world. With their significantly larger tires, these bikes allow riders to tackle snowy terrain without slipping or sinking as much. For the best thrills and views in Mammoth Lakes, try riding along the Lakes Basin Path or exploring the trails to Mountain View.
4. Snowcat Tours
Snowcats are machines that are typically used to groom trails but now Mammoth Mountain is offering snowcat tours to Minaret Vista. A truly luxury experience, these rides are complemented by refreshments and snacks, making it a truly memorable outing in the backdrop of stunning views.
5. Ice Climbing
Mammoth Lakes is located very close to two ice climbing areas, June Lake and Lee Vining. Ideal for beginners, the June Lake area, which is 20 minutes north of Mammoth Lakes, features easily accessible one-two-pitch climbs in a gorgeous alpine setting. Just 30 minutes north of Mammoth Lakes, Lee Vining Canyon is California’s top destination for experienced climbers, with frozen waterfalls perfect for challenging climbs.
6. Winter Running
Running the snow-covered trails around Mammoth is a fun winter adventure. Sherwin Creek Road, with stunning views of Mammoth Mountain, the Sherwins, and the White Mountains, offers a panoramic experience of breathtaking mountain scenery in every direction. Additionally, Laurel Pond and Mammoth Track are also great running trails.
7. Ice Skating
Ice skating is a timeless winter activity that everyone can enjoy. The LA Kings Ice at Mammoth Lakes, located at 686 Old Mammoth Road, features an Olympic-size indoor rink. Families can also take lessons and create unforgettable memories while gliding across the ice together.
8. Snowmobiling
Once a vital mode of winter transportation in remote areas, snowmobiling has now evolved into a popular leisure sport and one of the fastest-growing winter activities. With access to 80 miles of groomed snowmobile trails and 75,000 acres of open expanse, the Eastern Sierra delivers some of the best snowmobiling in the West. Guided snowmobile tours and self-guided trips make it easy for visitors with all levels of experience to enjoy this exciting winter activity in Mammoth Lakes.
9. Snow Tubing
As the name suggests, snow tubing is a must-try activity in Mammoth Lakes. Enjoy lift-accessed groomed trails at Woolly’s Tube Park or if you have your own tube, you can also find open terrain on public land, hike up moderate hills, and slide down for the ultimate thrill of your life.
10. Snowplay
Finally, play in the snow as much as your heart wants. In winter, Mammoth Lakes is covered in snow, creating a stunning backdrop for exploring a variety of activities.
