In a world constantly seeking new ways to express creativity, Anushka Khanna’s venture into the culinary world with Neuma, Karan Johar’s luxurious European restaurant, breathes fresh vitality into the discourse on design influence. The designer’s collaboration with Neuma draws inspiration from her new Pret collection and her philosophy of self-expression. While Khanna’s expertise lies in the world of fashion, these desserts effortlessly encapsulate the same essence of design through both flavour and presentation. We sat down with the designer to learn more about the inspiration behind this exciting collaboration and delve into her insights on the intriguing intersection of food and fashion.
1. Could you elaborate on the creative vision behind your collaboration with Neuma for this exclusive dessert collection?
Anushka Khanna: My vision was to merge the worlds of fashion and food, finding parallels between the meticulous craftsmanship and vibrant aesthetics of my Pret collection with the artistry and deliciousness of desserts. I drew inspiration from the idea of “elevated basics”—using high-quality ingredients and unique flavour combinations to create beautiful and indulgent desserts, just like my separates empower individuals to express their own style.
2. Take us through the process of integrating elements from your Pret collection into both the design and flavours of the desserts.
Anushka Khanna: The colours, textures, and playful spirit of my Pret collection influenced the dessert design and flavours. The 3 Chocolate Hazelnut Mousse reflects the rich, layered textures of my fabrics, while the Berry Eton Mess evokes the playfulness of printed separates. The Basque Cheesecake, with its unexpected burnt caramel notes and vibrant pistachio glaze, represents the bold colour palettes I use.
3. Since every brand has a certain set of ethos to follow, tell us what are the design ethos that you follow. And how have you translated the same into the collaborative venture with Neuma?
Anushka Khanna: My design ethos revolves around intricate details, timeless elegance, and celebrating individuality. This translates to the desserts through meticulously crafted elements like the feuilletine crust and Italian meringue shards, the use of high-quality ingredients, and the unique flavour profiles that cater to diverse palates.
4. As a fashion designer, how do you perceive the role of sensory experiences, such as taste and texture, in expressing creativity?
Anushka Khanna: Sensory experiences play a crucial role in fashion. The colours, textures, and drapes of my garments evoke emotions and tell a story. Similarly, the taste, texture, and presentation of these desserts create a multi-sensory experience that complements the visual appeal and leaves a lasting impression.
5. What do you hope diners experience or take away from indulging in these fashion-inspired desserts?
Anushka Khanna: I hope diners indulge in these desserts with the same joy and appreciation they would experience with a beautiful piece of clothing. I want them to savour the intricate flavours, appreciate the craftsmanship, and be inspired to express their individuality through their own culinary choices.
6. Lastly, what’s next for Anushka Khanna?
Anushka Khanna: I’m constantly exploring new avenues to push creative boundaries and redefine luxury fashion. I’m excited to unveil upcoming collections that stay true to my design ethos while incorporating innovative elements.
