One of the most common changes in our routines during the pandemic has been an increased amount of screen time. With remote working and online classes becoming the accepted norm, and streaming platforms becoming a pervasive presence in our lives, we’re in need of a collective digital detox. Excessive exposure to screens impacts our sleeping patterns, mental well-being, and overall health. Here are some simple solutions that could help you use technology to enhance your life, instead of drain your energies.
1. Track your screen time
Identify the gadget that you use most often, try to estimate how many hours a day you spend on that gadget (many phones have inbuilt screen-time trackers), and start limiting its usage gradually instead of taking an extreme approach. Over time, you can set time limits for using technology by changing the settings on your device.
2. Turn off notifications
One of the most common reasons for constantly checking our phones and laptops is the constant influx of notifications. Many of these updates are not important but significantly contribute to increasing your screen time. The best way around this problem is to understand which notifications are causing distractions and mute them.
3. Delete unnecessary apps and widgets
This step requires more self-reflection. Certain apps, especially social media platforms, are designed to be addictive. If you feel that a particular app or widget is triggering compulsive behaviours or causing more harm than good, it is wise to delete the app or temporarily disable your account – and observe how it affects you.
4. Find alternatives to technology
To build a discipline with technology usage, find more rewarding ways of spending your time – by increasing your physical activity, reading more, scheduling regular breaks from screens during the day, taking a short nap to rest your eyes, or spending more time with your loved ones. Focusing your energies on something that fuels your stamina will help you adopt a more well-balanced lifestyle.
