10 ways to make yoga interesting

As quoted by Jigar Gor “Yoga is not about touching your toes, it is what you learn on the way down.” Yoga is derived from a Sanskrit word ‘yuj’ which means “to unite”, “to control” and “to discipline”. With growing period of time, yoga is also gaining a lot of popularity these days. But sometimes even these healthy practices can become boring due to their old and repetitive movements.

Savitha Murthy, Consultant yoga therapist at Fortis Hospital, Bengaluru brings 10 ways for you to break the monotony and bring back the liveliness to your yoga routine.

Break the monotony

Practising the same sequence of yoga postures every day will make sessions monotonous for you. Once the asanas are taught then the sequence of the postures can be put differently after every alternate period.

Yoga with music

A melodious and rhythmic music played during the session will make your workout effortless. There are a lot of meditation and chanting music available online which are specially made to aid the practice of yoga.

Challenging poses

Challenging yourself to do difficult asanas will make you push a little more than your comfort level. You can practice Asanas like Gandhi Bherundasana (Formidable face pose), Sirsa Padasana (Head to foot pose), etc.

 Therapeutic Yoga

Conducting sessions related to different ailments like back pain, shoulder pain, leg pain etc. will be beneficial.

Distressing session

Practising Pranayama and meditation regularly will relax you and will make you look forward to more of these sessions.

Yoga events

Prepare for events like Yoga day, Ratha Saptami etc. It will motivate you to work towards the event.

 Partner Yoga

Performing yoga with a partner will make your sessions more fun and exciting, as there will always be a sense of motivation and friendly competition to perform better. It will provide you instant and better results.

Simplifying the Asana

Difficult postures can be simplified to motivate the Yoga practitioners to reach the final pose. Practicing each movement individually will help them understand the asana more properly. Just like: Surya Namaskar,  which is a combination of 12 powerful yoga movements.

 Pulse of the class

By sensing the pulse of the class sequence should be created so that there is complete involvement in doing the Asanas.

Types of yoga

Introducing simple posts of other types of yoga in the routine will increase your curiosity. Example: wall Yoga, Iyengar Yoga etc.
